EXCEDRIN RACING TEAM
FINISHES 18TH IN NASHVILLE
GLADEVILLE, Tenn. (April 13, 2002)
? Todd Bodine and the Excedrin Racing
team took the checkered flag in
17th place in the Pepsi 300 at Nashville
(Tenn.) Superspeedway last Saturday.
Bodine and the team ran strong - leading 15 laps - but an ill-timed caution
flag midway through the event crushed their chances for victory.
Bodine ran a speed of 158.554 miles
per hour around the 1.33-mile concrete
oval during qualifying on Friday
afternoon, which placed him in 19th position
on the starting grid and lined him
up on the inside of row 10.
The green flag flew for the start
of the race and, thanks in part to the
quick moving inside line, Bodine
picked up three positions before crossing
the starting line. Almost immediately
Bodine radioed to crew chief Tony
Liberati that the Excedrin Chevrolet
was tight in the middle of the corners
and loose off. Liberati made plans
to place a rubber in the left rear spring
as well as make an air pressure
adjustment to the rear tires. The opportunity
to make those changes came when
NASCAR was forced to throw a caution flag due to a light rain shower on
lap 19 of the 225-lap event. Bodine was in
the 13th spot when he came down
pit road for his stop and returned to the
track in 26th.
The rain showers subsided and the
track went green again on lap 44. Bodine
worked through traffic and was in
15th place when the second caution flag
of the day came on lap 59. The team
made the decision to pit on lap 60
for four fresh tires, fuel and another
air pressure adjustment to the rear
tires. Most of the field did not
make pit stops and the No. 92 restarted
in 20th place.
The adjustments made to the car did
the trick and Bodine drove the Excedrin
Chevrolet steadily through the field.
On lap 111, Bodine passed Jason Keller
for the lead and remained there
for 15 laps before entering pit road for
a routine pit stop on lap 127. Unfortunately,
a caution flag was thrown
seven laps later, which put the
No. 92 Herzog Jackson Motorsports team one
lap down. Things went from bad to
worse when Bodine was forced to duck
into the pits 10 laps later with
concern that his left rear tire was flat.
The crew gave him four new tires,
and not long afterwards Bodine was posting
the fastest times of the field.
Contact with the No. 26 of Bobby
Hamilton Jr. caused damage to the right
side of the Excedrin Chevrolet and
Bodine commented to the crew that the
car had become extremely loose,
due either to the damage or to the current
set of tires. He confirmed that
fact when he spun the car coming off of
turn two on lap 164, but made a
great save and kept the car off of the wall.
A caution flag was thrown that enabled
Bodine to make a pit stop for four
tires and adjustments to tighten
up the handling of the car. Bodine took
the checkered flag in 18th. The
team fell one spot in the point standings
to 12th place.
"We did everything right, we just
didn?t get the gas mileage that we needed,"
stated Bodine following the event.
"We had one of the best cars here by
far. We're gaining on it and getting
better every week. The bright spot
is that Rambo (Liberati) and I communicated
well, made all the right calls
and had the fastest car. Once we
put everything together we're going to
win some races. It's just a shame
that when you have the fastest car and
you don't win, but that's the way
racing is sometimes."
The NASCAR Busch Series puts on the
restrictor plates and heads to the
2.66-mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway
for the running of the Aaron?s
312 on April 20. Qualifying for
the race will take place on Thursday April
18 at 4:00 p.m. CDT. The Aaron?s
312 will be broadcast live on MRN Radio
and FOX television at 2:00 p.m.
EDT.
