Todd Bodine has plenty
of great memories of Monster Mile
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Look high atop
the NASCAR Busch Series win chart for Dover (Del.) Downs International
Speedway and you’ll see that one man stands alone. Todd Bodine, driver
of the No. 92 Excedrin Chevrolet, holds the distinction of being the only
Busch Series driver to have won three times at the famed Monster Mile.
Bodine’s accomplishments even beat out legendary drivers Harry Gant and
Darrell Waltrip, who both won only twice at the speedway during their Busch
Series careers.
Bodine has made 16 Busch Series starts
on the 1.0-mile concrete oval since his first start back in 1990.
He is one of only five drivers in this weekend’s field who have competed
there at least that many times. Bodine started off with a bang, qualifying
in 1990 in fourth and finishing in an impressive third. In 1991,
in only his second start at the speedway, Bodine was first to the checkered
flag to score his very first Busch Series victory in only his 22nd career
start.
The victory in 1991 was only the
beginning of Bodine’s success as he grabbed the pole for the Budweiser
200 in 1992 and went on to sweep both events at Dover in 1993. All
in all, Bodine has racked up three victories, one pole position, seven
top-five finishes and nine top-10s at Dover. He also stands in seventh
on the all-time total purse won list.
Bodine looks forward to competing
in Dover with his Excedrin Racing team, led by crew chief Tony (Rambo)
Liberati. The Herzog Jackson Motorsports team has been on somewhat
of a hot streak lately with two top-five finishes in the past three races,
a season-high second at New Hampshire International Speedway and a fifth-place
finish last weekend at Lowe’s (Concord, N.C.) Motor Speedway. The
team has prepared HJM-06 for this weekend’s MBNA Platinum 200, the same
car that Bodine raced to an eighth-place finish earlier this season at
Bristol Motor Speedway.
“Dover is a great track and I typically
do pretty well there,” comments Bodine. “It’s an exciting track for
both the drivers and the fans. I won my first Busch Series race ever
there in 1991 then went on to win both Busch races in 1993, plus I’ve got
a pole there. I’ve had a great deal of success there and it would
be great for our Excedrin Racing team to score our first win of the 2002
season in Dover.”
The MBNA Platinum 200, a 200-mile
event, will be broadcast live on Saturday afternoon on MRN radio and FX
television beginning at 12:30 p.m. EDT. Bodine will also be one of
several drivers pulling double duty this weekend when he races his No.
26 Discover Card Ford for Haas Carter Motorsports in the NASCAR Winston
Cup event on Sunday. It will be Bodine’s first Cup start since the
event in Las Vegas earlier in the season.
