EXCEDRIN RACING TEAM
NETS TOP-FIVE FINISH AT LOWE’S
CONCORD,
N.C. (May 25, 2002) –Todd Bodine and the Excedrin Racing team collected
their third top-five finish of the season during the CARQUEST Auto Parts
300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway last Saturday. The top five was the 141st
of Bodine’s NASCAR Busch Series career.
Bodine was
the 12th of 48 competitors to take to the track during qualifying on Friday
afternoon. Bodine ran a speed of 180.608 miles per hour around the
1.5-mile oval, which placed him in fifth place on the starting grid.
“That was
pretty good,” said Bodine after his run. “It was about a tenth faster
than what we ran in practice and that’s pretty good for this time of the
day. This effort really shows the character of this team since this
is a brand new car that had never turned a lap before practice this morning.
Right off the truck, this car was good. For the crew to put a car
together like they did and it comes out and runs as fast as it did is pretty
impressive to me.”
The green
flag flew on Saturday afternoon and it wasn’t long before the caution flags
began to fly. Bodine was in sixth place when the first yellow flag
was thrown, and without hesitation, he radioed to his crew chief, Tony
Liberati, that the No. 92 Excedrin Chevrolet was tight. The team
made plans to insert a spring rubber in the right rear spring and made
an air pressure adjustment to the tires. Bodine drove into the pits
to the attention of his crew on lap 44. It became apparent that more changes
needed to be made to the car and Bodine once again made a pit stop during
a caution period on lap 63.
Changes
were made to the car throughout the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300 to remedy both
tight and loose handling conditions. Bodine broke back into the top
10 just after the halfway mark of the race and remained there for most
of the remainder of the event. The ninth and final caution flag of
the day came out on lap 193 and Bodine and Liberati made the decision to
pit for four fresh tires. Bodine entered the pits in ninth place
– one of 10 cars on the lead lap - and returned to the track in 10th after
the majority of the leaders remained on the track. The green flag
flew on lap 197 and in less than three laps, Bodine picked up five spots
to take the checkered flag in fifth place.
The NASCAR
Busch Series heads to Dover (Del.) Downs International Speedway next weekend
for the running of the MBNA Platinum 200 on Saturday afternoon. The
event will be broadcast live on FX television and MRN radio at 1:00 p.m.
EDT. Qualifying for the race will take place on Friday, May 31 at
12:15 p.m. EDT.
