BRICKYARD 400 August
5, 2001
TODD BODINE
No. 66 Kmart Blue Light Special Ford

Todd Bodine finished 24th, the first car one lap down and
moves his Blue Light Special team up two positions in Winston Cup Driver standings after
the Brickyard 400 on Sunday.
Bodine qualified 10th for the 160 lap event and held onto
that position as long as possible. But, the car began to drop early in the race due to a
poor handling condition. During an early caution on Lap 32, the crew took the time to jack
the car up and make some adjustments to the rear end of the car to help correct the
situation. That pushed them from 18th back to 32nd on the restart.
However, Bodine worked his No. 66 Blue Light Ford
efficiently and steadily up through the field on a track which passing is generally known
to be difficult. By Lap 65 he was ranked 9th. On Lap 73 he pulled into the pits for a
scheduled green flag stop and on Lap 75 the caution came out for debris and caught the No.
66 one lap down.
After the restart Bodine held off the leader for nearly 20
laps, in an attempt to get back on the lead lap, but began getting way too loose and was
forced to drop behind Steve Park's No. 1 Chevrolet.
Bodine continued to run times competitive with the leaders,
but track position did not allow him to profit from his efforts. Nevertheless, he finished
24th, the first car one-lap down and moved up two positions in the point standings.
RACE WEEKEND FOR KMART RACING AND
HAAS CARTER MOTORSPORTS SPENCER AND BODINE IN THE TOP TEN FOR THE BRICKYARD 400

Haas Carter Motorsports and Kmart Racing drivers Jimmy
Spencer and Todd Bodine capture two of the top-ten starting spots for one of NASCAR
Winston Cup Racing's most historic and prestigious races - The Brickyard 400 in
Indianapolis, Indiana.
Spencer and Bodine both tested at the track earlier last
month and for qualifying and it paid off for both. Spencer grabbed the top spot early on
Saturday and held of 42 cars after he qualified to maintain the pole position. Bodine who
took his No. 66 Kmart Blue Light Ford out eighth and held onto a top-10 for Sunday's
event.
"My guys built me a brand new car for here and this is
the best we've ever been at Indy. Donnie (Wingo) is just doing such a great job for me and
I can't say enough about him and all the guys back in the shop he's got working for
him," Spencer said of his effort.
"The whole package is getting better. The poles are
nice, but we'd like to win races and that's what we want to do really bad -- mainly for
Carl Haas and Travis (Carter). That would be awesome if we could win a race and that's
what we're hoping for."
Bodine, who has claimed two poles this season for Haas
Carter Motorsports; Chicagoland and the July Pocono race, was disappointed by his run, but
glad to have a top-ten start.
"The track lost a lot of grip. We misjudged how much
it was gonna lose and the car was just too loose. When you lose four-tenths qualifying
it's pretty disappointing, but that's all I really wanted was to get in the top 10 and
have a decent starting spot."
Congratulations Team Mate
Jimmy Spencer

Jimmy Spencer took "The Pole" in Indy with a
lap speed of 179.666 mph!! Both Todd & Jimmy will now be in the Bud Shoot out in
2002!
